WELCOME YOUR NEWEST FAMILY MEMBER

Adopt a Twenty Tails Cat!

If you’re interested in one of our adoptable cats, start by applying here and we’ll be in touch if it’s a match. All Twenty Tails cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and fully vaccinated before adoption.

Adoption Fees & What's Included

Adoption fee: $200 (non-refundable)

All cats come spayed or neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations, and tested negative for FIV/FELV.

Kitten Adoptions: Adopters must sign an additional agreement committing to spay or neuter their kitten when it reaches the appropriate age or weight. You may arrange this service through your own veterinarian or coordinate through Twenty Tails Rescue.

How It Works

Application

Potential adopters will fill out our Adoption Application. Once we receive your submission, we’ll review your application to see if your preferred cat or any other cats in our program would be a great fit for you and your home.

Discovery Call

If we think it’s a match, we’ll reach out to schedule a phone interview where we’ll ask you some questions. This is also the time for potential adopters to ask us questions, too!

Reference Checks

We’ll contact your vet to confirm that you have let them know you’re intending to adopt a new pet. Applicants without a current vet will need to call a veterinarian of their choice to set up a new client account. We will not adopt a cat to applicants who don’t have healthcare pre-planned.

Renters can adopt from Twenty Tails after we have confirmed landlord approval.

Site Visit

We take extra care to ensure our cats will thrive in your home, which will be their new home, too. Site visits are typically required but may be waived under special circumstances.

Meet and Greet

It’s time to see if it’s a match! Potential adopters will have the chance to meet the cat or cats they have applied for in person. If it’s a good fit, adopters could possibly take their new family member home that day if the cat has been medically cleared.

Adoption Day!

Get excited! It’s time to bring your furry friend home. All adopters will receive medical documents and microchip information on Adoption Day. Adopters must also pay the adoption fee and submit the Adoption Agreement on the same day. We will take a beautiful family photo with you and your new pet that we share on social media. It’s big news!

Furrever and Always

We reach out to all adopters after the first night, first week, and first month after Adoption Day. All you have to do is love and care for your Twenty Tails cat. If things aren’t working out, we will lovingly accept the cat back into our program with no judgment. Our cats’ happiness – and yours – are our #1 priority.

The 3-3-3 Rule

Every cat is unique and will adjust differently.

New Cat? Set Realistic Expectations!

You can expect that it will take your cat some time to get used to the new routines and environment. The ‘Rule of Three’ means that you can gauge the time it might take for your cat to fully acclimate to his home in threes: three days, three weeks, and three months.

3 Days: Be Patient

What to expect: Overwhelmed and fearful behavior, such as hiding under furniture, not eating or drinking much, and being shy. They may have accidents or avoid the litter box.

What to do: Confine them to one quiet room, provide hiding spots, and let them come to you on their own terms.

3 Weeks: Expanding Horizons

What to expect: The cat starts settling in, learning the routine, and appearing more often. Curiosity sets in, and they may start playing.

What to do: Establish consistent feeding and playtime routines to build confidence.

3 Months: Likely Settled In

What to expect: The cat feels fully comfortable in their new home, has built a bond with you, and their true personality emerges.

What to do: Continue reinforcing the bond with, positive interaction, play, and love.
