Give an unowned cat a chance at the life it deserves in the great outdoors! In return, you'll keep the rodent populations down on your property.
Our Barn Cat Program saves cats from euthanasia to give them the best possible chance at a life with purpose. Most of these cats will never be tame but some do warm up to human presence. If you're looking for a tame cat as a pet, fill out our house cat adoption application.
Before you trap an unowned cat...
Cat colonies thrive best when trapped, spayed/neutered, and returned to where they came from. Many well-meaning people trap colonies with the belief that separating them and finding adoptive homes (or barns) is in the cats' best interest. The opposite is true! While we are excited to give these cats a second chance, it is always our primary goal to keep colonies together. Separation is the last ditch effort if no other solution can be found in giving all cats the lives they deserve.
Get in touch with us using the contact form below to start an inquiry for barn cat adoption. We'll ask a few questions over the phone to see if a barn cat is right for you.
Before official adoption, we will make sure your property is suitable for a barn cat.
On adoption day, we'll drop off the cats, their housing, and a few other supplies to get started. We'll also give you a debriefing on setting everyone up for success.
Barn cats need 3-4 weeks to become familiar with their new environments. During this time, you will care for them in enclosures that will ensure their safety and well-being.
Once the cats are ready to be released, we will guide you through the process and return to your property to collect our supplies. The next barn cats need us!
ADOPTED!
Just when you think you know cats. a feline like River comes along and changes everything! Once dubbed "the wild beast", River has come out of her shell to show us that she is curious, playful, and oh so brave. Human hands and feet may as well be mice, so she'll be going to a country barn to live out her hunting dreams.
ADOPTED!
Whiskey is a unique boy in that he came to us as a solo rescue. We placed him into foster care with River and they have done very well together! Whiskey is very slowly learning that humans mean him no harm but would rather be on his own in the great outdoors. We are so excited to place him in a barn with River.

Our sweet yet oh-so-scared Amber is the poster child for undersocialized cats. She is proof that even the domesticated feline can be quite the opposite and also taught foster mom a lot about proper hand protection from bites. Amber has now gone home to a barn in Healdsburg where she can stretch those murder mittens on acres of open land... with a view!
ADOPTED!
Mama to Sage (and possibly Yarrow and Lupine), shy girl Willow would rather be out in the world than anywhere near people, and that's okay with us. Willow came to Twenty Tails after being trapped and spayed and is already adjusting to life in her new barn with all three of her colony mates.
ADOPTED!
Lupine came to us alongside Yarrow and Sage from a good samaritan who could no longer foster the three "littles" after their spay/neuter appointments. Lupine is the bravest of them and while slightly confident around people, he is better off in the wild.
ADOPTED!
Yarrow, the "house leopard" is as wild as her nickname insinuates. She is as brave as her brother Lupine but like most kittens born in the wild, is quite afraid of people. We observed her long enough to assess that she would thrive in an outdoor environment where humans have committed to feeding and sheltering.

Bruto has no idea how good life is going to be when he finds his forever barn! He is somewhat comfortable around humans but doesn't like to get too close, so we know he'll be happiest as a man of nature.
ADOPTED!
Dulce is a 1-year-old female and is very sweet for a barn cat. She'll be a great companion with her colony mate, Jerica, who will be going to the same barn assignment.
ADOPTED!
Brother to Dulce, shy boy Banksy took a while to warm up but eventually came around to accepting pets. Banksy is living the dream life on a beautiful rural property with Dulce and Jerica.
ADOPTED!
Timid 1-year-old Jerica is the quietest of all of our rescued Hopland colony. Her favorite place is a cozy corner where she can have some peace and quiet with sister Dulce.
ADOPTED!
Big boy Birdie is a 2-year-old under-socialized long-haired tabby. He's far too independent to ever become a house pet and is the most play-focused of our cats! He'll make a great mouser.
ADOPTED!
Did someone order a purrito, extra spicy? McNab is the sassiest of our working cats and is also bonded to Birdie. She's 6-months-old and is likely Birdie's daughter. We're assigning them to the same barn so they have the best possible chance at life as barn cats.
ADOPTED!
Hops is the strong silent type and will most likely stay that way for the rest of his life. He joined Amber and Bruto on the same property in Healdsburg and we are so thrilled that three of our Hopland colony cats could stay together.
